Don’t miss the hilarious new play from White Rock Players

The new White Rock Players production starts tomorrow

The new White Rock Players production starts tomorrow

Ken Ludwig’s celebrated farce Lend Me A Tenor opens tomorrow, June 13th at Coast Capital Playhouse (1532 Johnston Road, White Rock).

Directed by Ryan Mooney (who helmed last year’s Nunsense) the show promises a fast, funny farrago set in Cleveland’s opera house in 1934.

Chaos ensues when renowned Italian tenor Tito Merelli (Michael Kalmuk), also known as ‘Il Stupendo,’ receives an accidental double-dose of tranquilizers, just before he is to make his Cleveland debut in a gala fundraising performance of Verdi’s Otello.

Scheming opera company general manager Saunders (Fred Partridge) is determined the show must go on at all costs, which includes having his own assistant, Max (Aaron Reno) don the blackface required for the role. The ruse works – until Merelli, also in blackface, wakes up and heads for the stage, determined to fulfill the contract.

Complicating matters: Merelli’s jealous wife Maria (Launi Bowie); Saunders’ daughter Maggie (Nicole Smashnuk), who has designs on Merelli; society woman Julia (Susanne de Pencier), ambitious soprano Diana (Jackie Block) and a bellhop who wants to be an opera singer (Sean Donnelly).

The show runs until June 30th, with 8 pm performances and a 2.30 pm Sunday matinee.

For tickets and show time information, visit White Rock Players or call 604-536-7535.

Jazz trio to jam with Semiahmoo Strings at a special event this Friday

Classical music will be fused with jazz during a special Semiahmoo Strings concert this Friday, June 8th in South Surrey.

The ensemble will be joined by guest musicians Miles Black (piano), Jodi Proznick (bass) and Craig Scott (drums) for a “Classics and Classic Jazz” show at Peace Portal Alliance Church, 15128 27B Avenue, Surrey.

“The program features classics by Mozart, Handel and Copland, and classic jazz by Duke Ellington, Jean-Luc Ponty and Stéphane Grappelli, as well as some exciting premiere performances,” event organizer Harold Birston explained.

Those who heard the guest trio perform with the orchestra in 2007 know what magic these three can weave around the rich sonic texture of the strings, Birston added. “If you are a newcomer to jazz, the concert will offer a tantalizing introduction to the music – everything from swing and Latin jazz, to the more contemporary sounds of French fiddle master Jean-Luc Ponty (performed by our own fiddle master, Kiérah), as well as the premieres of new works by Black and (myself).”

Tickets for the concert are $18, or $10 for students and seniors. For more details, call 604-538-1460 or visit Tapestry Music, 1335 Johnston Rd., White Rock.
